    1. some motorcycles get better mileage than your prius.
    2. why don’t you do it in 2008 instead of 2009… what do you have to lose? next year you might be locked into a full time job.
    3. amtrak might actually be more fun than driving … and probably more environmentally friendly.

Thanks party pooper. haha. Just kidding.

    1. I’m not riding a motorcycle.
    2. The conference is in 2009. I’d like to have a destination that means much to me to aim at during my road trip.
    3. Yeah, Amtrak probably is more environmentally friendly. But it’s more of a straight, non-stop train ride, whereas a road trip involves meeting people along the way whenever you want to stop.

But good points. I think for the sake of not missing work, I probably WOULD do it this year.

    And where’s YOUR new blog?

Ivan, this trip sounds like it would be a blast. Driving is fun, but I would recommend taking a friend with you so you don’t tire yourself out while driving the whole way.

Also, having recently taken the train in liu of driving for my trip to Reno, get a sleeper car if you do take the train. Otherwise you are stuck in a chair for 2-3 days and you don’t get to sleep laying down. Conversly, the train goes by some of the most beautiful country side in the country (the Sierras were breathtaking) that you wouldn’t normally get to see from a car.

I really do love this idea. And if you do have a real job, you’ll probably get some vacation time.

Good advice, Tracy. Yeah, I intend on bringing a friend along. I think that would make the trip a little more fun.

And I’ll definitely look for a sleeper car if I take the train; I never thought about that option, since my train experience is only from the Bay Area to Davis and back. And I’m sure I’ll still get to see really nice views by taking the train; I saw some great shots from an Amtrak destination catalog.
